Building Habits

Set your mind and keep focused habitually on the things above [the heavenly things]...
Colossians 3:2 (AMP)
Continuing our discussion of treasures in heaven, I like the Amplified version’s addition of the word habitually, it’s even italicized for extra emphasis. There are so many things that want to distract us, there are so many things that want to pull us away from God and so many things that want to keep us from walking the right path. It’s our habits that will help keep us walking the straight narrow. It’s like anything in our lives, if you want to exercise to get healthier you need to make it a habit that means you have to build it into your life. That means work. Habits aren’t easy, they must be repeated for a long time until it becomes natural. Anything worth doing takes effort, and building a relationship with God and celebrating the treasures that He brings into our lives is unquestionably worth all the effort.

I have many habits, some good and some bad. I have habits that range from the order in which I get ready every morning to calling my mom every time I am driving home at night. A habit I am still trying to build into my life is giving God time every single day. One of the reasons why I talk about it so much is because I need that reminder just as much as anybody else. God is very important to me. My relationship with Jesus should be the number one thing in my life, sadly it is not. I want Him to be more than just a habit, I want God to be my all. But, it starts with my habits, it starts with making it routine to think about Him, to turned to Him in all circumstances first, rely on Him, be guided by Him and living constantly in His presence with awareness. This is my goal in life, what is yours? What habits can you start to make Jesus a priority? How can you habitually look to the treasures from above? I recommend talking to God about this, pour out your heart, talk about your frustrations and your fears and your needs. There is no better listener than God. And when you’re ready, sit in quiet and solitude and let Him help you establish your habits.
